Mario
In Donkey Kong, 1981, his participation was under the name of Jumpman, whose mission was to rescue Pauline, the damsel in distress kidnapped by an ape called Donkey Kong.
Two years later, Mario was accompanied by his brother Luigi in another arcade game, called Mario Bros., which was made as a spin-off of Jumpman, after his first participation where he was a Plumber. For this new adaptation, Mario had to exterminate various plagues that went through pipes.
His new name was inspired by then proprietor of the company’s offices, Mario Segali. According to Nintendo’s design team, Segali and Jumpman had physical characteristics very similar to each other, so it was from then on that they replaced the previous name Jumpman to Mario.
Given the technology in development that they had during that generation, the designers of Mario could not animate perfectly in each of his movements, sometimes making unintentional mistakes like making disappear any of the limbs of the character. Because of this, they chose to add certain details to solve these technical problems. It was then that Mario began to have solid shirt, gloves, hat and mustache, the elements that would appear in the following adaptations, giving a distinctive touch to the personage.
Because of this, when you hear about Super Mario, he usually relates to the plumber with mustache, who wears blue shirt, pants with red suspenders and makes huge jumps. When he catches a mushroom, he becomes Super Mario, an increase in size, when he grabs a flower in Fire Mario, he is capable of throwing fireballs, and when he catches a star, he can pass through the dangers without losing his life.
